(INSTRUCTIONS AT THE BOTTOM)

This is one of the most effective tools I’ve ever used to stop migraines from spiralling (with a caveat that you have to be consistent in using it so you get better at doing it!).

When you focus your attention on the natural rhythm of your breath – without changing it, just observing – something magical happens:

  • Your nervous system slows down.
  • Your thoughts soften.
  • Your pain signals quieten.
  • Your migraine retreats.

And it’s all grounded in two powerful neuroscience concepts:

  1. Neuroception: your body’s subconscious way of detecting safety or threat. With this technique, you teach your body to feel safe again.
  2. Interoception: tuning into your internal world, becoming aware of subtle signals, and creating inner clarity.

Short term: You can interrupt an incoming migraine by creating stillness in the mind.

Long term: You rewire your brain to stop reacting with pain. You train your nervous system to remain calm and grounded.

Instructions

  1. Find somewhere quiet to sit, either on a chair, or cushion with your legs crossed It is fine if you need to sit somewhere with your back supported
  2. Put headphones in if you do not have a completely quiet place, otherwise go ahead an click play beneath.

Bonus tip:

You can practise this either when you feel a migraine might be coming on, but you can also listen to this every morning to supercharge your resilience against a migraine when you sense one coming!
